A close friend of mine has just announced that she is having a baby, and it made me reflect on the African proverb “It takes a village to bring up a child” and more generally on the concept of family and community. What defines a community? What creates it? Supports it? Enables it, and, by extension, the people within it to flourish? I don’t have the definitive answer, but as someone who moved to London and has created a community and a “family” of friends, community to me is about interconnection; making time to be respectfully curious about the people around you; being open to the multiple definitions people carry about family and community and holding our assumptions lightly about others. I believe that if we focus on the subsystems such as family and community and raise questions of how we work and live within them, we can find potential solutions for the challenges that we face in how we co-exist within the greater systems.
